US weighs import ban on Chinese optical modules

According to a Reuters report on the 4th, people familiar with the matter said the U.S. government is drafting a ban on imports of new Chinese data center components in a bid to protect its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure. The report said the Federal Communications Commission is working on measures to prohibit imports of new Chinese optical transceivers, and U.S. officials hope to publish and implement the ban within 2026.
Optical transceivers typically refer to the core functional components inside optical modules, responsible for converting between electrical and optical signals. Optical modules are key hardware that determine how efficiently data center computing power is released. The sources stressed that the FCC could still revise or shelve the restriction.
The report noted that if the ban takes effect, it could hit Innolight, one of the world's major suppliers. It would also raise operating costs for cloud service providers such as Amazon, forcing them to turn to other suppliers like Coherent and Lumentum in the United States.
According to Counterpoint Research, Innolight accounts for roughly 27% of the global data center optical transceiver module market. A report by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) therefore pointed out that Coherent and Lumentum lack the production scale to replace Chinese suppliers.
