On November 21, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced the results of its 2025 academician election. Professor Sun Hongbo from the Department of Precision Instruments, Tsinghua University, was successfully elected as a CAS academician in recognition of his outstanding academic achievements in the laser field.
Professor Sun has long served as a member of the expert review panel for the "Secret Light Awards (SLA)", an innovation award honoring contributions to China’s laser industry. His election not only represents the highest recognition of his top-tier academic expertise in lasers, but also underscores the robust academic strength and industry-leading status of the SLA’s expert review team.
Since its inception, the Secret Light Awards (SLA) has been guided by the core mission of "unearthing innovative forces and leading industry development", and has consistently strived to establish itself as the most credible and influential benchmark innovation award in China’s laser sector. The authority of the award stems primarily from the professionalism of its review panel: the SLA jury brings together authoritative scholars in laser and optoelectronics from the nation’s top research institutions, key laboratories, renowned universities and industry associations. It also incorporates senior technical experts from leading laser application enterprises including FAW Group, CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd., and TCL, forming a comprehensive professional review matrix that covers the entire "basic research - technology R&D-industrial application" chain.
Professor Sun Hongbo has long been engaged in research on laser precision manufacturing. His series of research efforts have made significant contributions to the development of nonlinear laser manufacturing—from the establishment of fundamental principles and technical systems, to equipment fabrication and large-scale engineering applications. His work has provided crucial technical support for the high-quality development of China’s laser industry. His election as a CAS academician is not only a high affirmation of his scientific contributions, but also indirectly testifies to the rigorous standards and forward-looking vision applied by the SLA in selecting its review experts, further enhancing the award’s credibility in the industry with this significant endorsement.
