Lumentum Holdings Inc., a global leader in optical and photonic solutions for cloud and network applications, announced on March 26, 2026 its plan to establish a new manufacturing facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, U.S. The 240,000-square-foot plant will produce advanced indium phosphide (InP)-based photonic devices, critical components powering the world’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
1. Overview of the New Facility
The Greensboro site was acquired from semiconductor chipmaker Qorvo. The location was selected for its highly skilled workforce, mature infrastructure, and favorable economic development policies at federal and state levels.
The plant is already operational and will be retrofitted to manufacture Lumentum’s InP-based photonic products, including continuous-wave (CW) lasers and ultra-high-power (UHP) lasers. The acquisition includes the transfer of an experienced workforce, allowing Lumentum to accelerate capacity expansion and ramp up production efficiently.
2. Collaboration with NVIDIA
NVIDIA will be a key customer of the new facility, supporting the expansion of critical U.S. infrastructure and R&D under the previously announced strategic partnership with Lumentum. Lumentum also plans to serve other leading AI infrastructure customers via this plant, meeting their optical demands for both scale-out and scale-up architectures.
3. Strengthening U.S. Manufacturing & AI Infrastructure
By expanding domestic manufacturing in the U.S., Lumentum is enhancing supply chain resilience, advancing its manufacturing reshoring strategy, and reinforcing its support for hyperscale cloud and AI infrastructure networks.
The new site will significantly expand Lumentum’s production capacity using 6-inch InP wafers. Mass production is scheduled to launch in mid-2028.
Michael Hurlston, Chief Executive Officer of Lumentum: “Our customers are building the infrastructure that will define the next computing era. This new InP manufacturing plant will greatly expand our capacity, deepen our strategic partnerships, and ensure we deliver the performance, reliability and scale required for the AI revolution.”
Debora Shoquist, Executive Vice President of Operations at NVIDIA: “As AI workloads expand at an unprecedented rate, secure and reliable access to high-performance photonic devices is critical. Lumentum’s investment in U.S. manufacturing capacity strengthens supply continuity, allowing us to meet growing infrastructure demands with confidence.”
4. Economic & Community Impact
Lumentum plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the coming years to expand the facility’s capacity and advanced manufacturing capabilities, while retaining and creating over 400 U.S. manufacturing jobs.
New roles will cover process & equipment engineering, manufacturing technicians, operations, supply chain, quality, management, IT, human resources and finance. The project is supported by state and local economic development programs.
Lee Lilley, North Carolina Secretary of Commerce: “I am deeply grateful that Lumentum has chosen North Carolina for its next and largest U.S. semiconductor manufacturing site. Our strong semiconductor ecosystem and skilled workforce deliver the talent industry leaders like Lumentum need to expand and serve the fast-growing AI market.”
Marikay Abuzuaiter, Mayor of Greensboro: “Lumentum’s investment in Greensboro proves our city competes and wins in industries shaping the global future. Advanced manufacturing for intelligent infrastructure is the next innovation frontier, and Greensboro has the talent and collaborative leadership businesses need to thrive. We are proud Lumentum chose our community to build, invest and create high-quality careers.”
