Recently, Sun Tao, General Manager of Guangdong Zhuojie Laser Technology Co., Ltd., accepted an exclusive interview with Laser Manufacturer News. He detailed the company's development path and strategic layout, revealing that the company is advancing the development of engineering prototypes for deep ultraviolet lasers and lithography excimer lasers, while also laying out picosecond/femtosecond ultrafast laser technologies. Could you share the background and original intention behind Zhuojie Laser's establishment? What key support has the Research Institute provided to the company during its development?
Mr. Sun: Zhuojie Laser was founded in October 2023, initiated by the Guangdong Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Hard Technology Innovation Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as "Hard Technology Research Institute"). Its establishment stems from the country's urgent need for independent and controllable core laser light source components in high-end equipment. The company was established based on the transformation of scientific and technological achievements of the Hard Technology Research Institute in deep ultraviolet lasers, blue lasers, and excimer lasers. Our original intention is to focus on the R&D and industrialization of high-end lasers through market-oriented mechanisms, addressing the reliance on imported high-end laser light sources in fields such as semiconductors, new displays, and new energy.
As the initiating entity, the Hard Technology Research Institute has provided multi-dimensional support to the company: first, continuous transformation of technological achievements, transferring the accumulated laser technology achievements of the institute to the company for rapid market launch; second, talent support, as the core team all comes from the institute, with profound technical background and engineering experience; third, resource connection, helping the company introduce strategic investors such as CASSTAR, Guangzhou Financial Holdings, and Science City Group, providing financial security for early-stage development.

Mr. Sun: The participation of investors such as CASSTAR has provided Zhuojie Laser with crucial financial support and industrial resource empowerment. The company has clearly allocated the funds to the development of engineering prototypes for new deep ultraviolet lasers and lithography/industrial excimer laser products, accelerating the transformation of core technologies from the laboratory to industrialization. Meanwhile, the investors' layout in hard technology has also brought the company resource connections in terms of customer information, policies, and project resources.
In terms of industry positioning, the company has further clarified its strategic position as a "core supplier of high-end light sources," focusing on national strategic industries such as semiconductors, new displays, and new energy, and adhering to the product direction of "replacing imports and breaking bottlenecks." Mr. Sun: In less than two years of development, Zhuojie Laser has achieved multi-dimensional breakthroughs:
First, the implementation of core technologies: The technical level of core products is domestically leading, with small-batch deliveries already realized, serving clients in fields such as semiconductor inspection, new energy batteries, automotive parts, and 3D additive manufacturing.
Second, the formation of a product matrix: We have developed multiple product lines including blue semiconductor lasers, ultraviolet (UV) and deep ultraviolet (DUV) lasers, and excimer lasers. Among them, blue semiconductor lasers cover a power range of 100W to 3500W; UV and DUV lasers (both products and prototypes) cover two operating modes—high-repetition-rate pulsed and continuous—across multiple wavelength ranges including 355nm, 266nm, 213nm, and 193nm; R&D on excimer lasers such as 308nm, 248nm, and 193nm has been initiated.
Third, market expansion: The company has established partnerships with multiple leading clients in industries such as new energy batteries, electric vehicle parts, semiconductor inspection, and lithography, with products introduced for sales and services. It has become one of the few domestic enterprises to achieve small-batch deliveries in these segmented fields. In 2024, we secured over 20 million yuan in orders, and our performance is growing rapidly this year.
In terms of market position, the company already has strong competitiveness in segmented fields such as blue laser welding, additive manufacturing, and semiconductor inspection. (1) Technological leadership: Building on the accumulated expertise of the Hard Technology Research Institute, we possess domestically leading technical capabilities in fields of high-end lasers such as deep ultraviolet and excimer lasers. For instance, the performance of our 266nm high-repetition-rate picosecond laser matches that of top international products.
(2) Product portfolio strategy: We have laid out three categories of products—short-term (blue light), medium-term (deep ultraviolet), and long-term (excimer)—creating a business relay to ensure sustained growth.

Laser Manufacturer News: Currently, Zhuojie Laser has developed four major product lines: excimer lasers, ultraviolet (UV) and deep ultraviolet (DUV) lasers, blue semiconductor lasers, and instrument light source lasers. Could you elaborate on the technical features of each series and their application scenarios in semiconductor manufacturing, new displays, new energy, and other fields?
Mr. Sun: Zhuojie Laser’s four product lines cover diverse field demands, with their technical features and application scenarios as follows:
Excimer lasers are applied in fields such as semiconductor lithography, display panel annealing and mass transfer, superconducting material manufacturing, and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). In particular, excimer lasers used in semiconductor lithography feature high repetition rate, high energy, and narrow pulse width.
UV and DUV lasers are mainly used in semiconductor inspection (dark-field illumination, with and without patterns), semiconductor product marking, and special material processing. The products cover multiple wavelengths including 355nm, 266nm, 213nm, and 193nm, with options for nanosecond, picosecond, and continuous-wave operation modes, boasting excellent stability and long service life.
Blue semiconductor lasers are primarily applied in welding and cladding of high-reflectivity materials, such as welding of new energy electrode tabs, sealing nails, inverters, and drive motors, as well as 3D printing and laser cladding. They offer power ranging from 100W to 3500W, with fiber-coupled and spatial output options, complete processing accessories (including blue-red composite processing heads, galvanometers, and cladding heads), and an optional OCT in-process welding inspection module, along with excellent stability and long service life.
Instrument light source lasers are mainly used in biomedical applications (gene detectors, flow cytometers) and precision instruments (microscopic light sources). These products feature multi-wavelength, custom light spot output, and high stability.
Laser Manufacturer News: This year, the company plans to launch a 400W 220μm fiber-coupled blue semiconductor laser. What technological breakthroughs does this product achieve? What is the current market feedback? Are there any typical implemented cases?
Mr. Sun: The newly launched 400W 220μm fiber-coupled blue semiconductor laser (model: BLF-455-400) is the company’s flagship product. Its technological breakthroughs lie in high energy density, excellent stability, and superior integration. It can be paired with a blue-red composite welding head and an in-process monitoring OCT module to achieve integrated "welding-monitoring" functionality.
Currently, this product has replaced other welding solutions in the manufacturing of several auto parts for new energy vehicles, with small-batch applications already in place. It has also been put into use in customers' domestic and overseas factories, receiving positive feedback. In the future, it will also make significant breakthroughs in fields such as 3D printing.
Laser Manufacturer News: Beyond existing products, what layouts has Zhuojie Laser made in exploring new businesses or technologies? For example, are there any next-generation laser technologies under development (such as shorter wavelengths, higher power density), or plans to expand into other application fields (such as medical care, aerospace)?
Mr. Sun: The company is advancing the development of engineering prototypes for deep ultraviolet lasers and lithography excimer lasers, while also laying out picosecond/femtosecond ultrafast laser technologies. We plan to expand into fields such as micromachining, power device packaging, and aerospace precision manufacturing. Key next-generation technologies include blue lasers with higher power density, deep ultraviolet light sources with shorter wavelengths and higher power (e.g., 193nm lasers, 10W high-repetition-rate 266nm lasers, etc.).
Laser Manufacturer News: Has the company collaborated with other institutions (such as universities, research institutes) in technological R&D? Could you share a typical case of technological breakthrough that demonstrates the industry-academia-research integrated innovation model?
Mr. Sun: On one hand, the company fully leverages the R&D platform and capabilities of the Hard Technology Research Institute; on the other hand, it maintains cooperation with R&D teams from universities including Tianjin University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, South China University of Technology, South China Normal University, and Guangdong University of Technology in areas such as technology, projects, and product R&D. We not only provide customized product services for university research but also conduct product engineering on the technological achievements of university teams to bring them to the market. For instance, in the R&D of deep ultraviolet lasers, we collaborated with a university on ultrafast fiber seed sources. Mr. Sun: The core of our short-term goals is to strengthen internal capabilities and enhance products. We will focus on the standardization and modularization of existing products, improve reliability and customer support capabilities, promote deeper cooperation with existing clients for all laser products, and at the same time expand to clients in related fields. In terms of products, we will pay more attention to optimizing specifications and refining them based on application needs. For the market, we will mainly focus on the domestic market in the short term to build a solid foundation, and plan to lay out overseas markets in the next three to five years.

Mr. Sun: Our long-term goal is to become a leader in China's high-end light source segmented market, and realize domestic substitution of core light sources in the semiconductor metrology and inspection field, lithography light source field, and display panel manufacturing process field. The company will build an integrated capability system covering R&D, manufacturing, and services by increasing R&D investment, introducing high-end talents, and cooperating with industrial capital.
Laser Manufacturer News: As an industry expert, how do you view the current demand changes and technological trends in the UV/DUV laser and semiconductor laser markets? What impact do these changes have on Zhuojie Laser’s product R&D?
Mr. Sun: Currently, market demand for UV/DUV lasers in fields such as scientific research, semiconductor metrology and inspection, and display panels continues to grow. At the same time, demand driven by artificial intelligence technology is changing rapidly, with multi-material systems and diverse manufacturing/packaging formats showing a shift towards customization. The consistent technological trend is moving towards shorter wavelengths, higher power, higher repetition rates (for pulsed lasers), narrower linewidths, and higher stability. Guided by market demand, Zhuojie Laser continuously adjusts its R&D direction and focuses on the layout of related products.
In the semiconductor laser market, the demand for specialty metal material processing in fields such as new energy, the 3C sector, and aerospace will continue to drive the development of blue semiconductor lasers. Blue lasers will develop towards higher power and finer core diameter output, and promote the R&D and application of in-process welding inspection modules and 3D printing accessories required for efficient and high-quality welding and additive manufacturing applications.

Mr. Sun: Currently, in the semiconductor, new display, and new energy sectors, domestic substitution will be a key direction in the next few years. By undertaking national and provincial-level scientific research projects, the company has overcome bottlenecks in the service life, beam quality, and power of deep ultraviolet lasers, and achieved breakthroughs in multiple key technologies for excimer lasers. In the future, we will continue to advance the comprehensive localization and engineering of components for deep ultraviolet lasers and excimer lasers in response to the needs of these industries, breaking the monopoly of foreign manufacturers on mid-to-high-end laser light sources in semiconductor inspection, lithography light sources, and new display fields.
Laser Manufacturer News: In your opinion, what key challenges must the company overcome to achieve its goal of becoming a "leader in segmented fields of China’s core suppliers of high-end light sources"? What expectations do you have for industry policies, capital support, or technological cooperation?
Mr. Sun: Currently, the key challenges we face include a shortage of high-end talents, long customer onboarding cycles for some clients, and the monopoly of certain components by foreign manufacturers. The company expects to receive more policy support for innovative and entrepreneurial enterprises—such as project support, R&D funding subsidies, and tax incentives. In terms of capital, we hope to further introduce industrial investors. Technologically, we look forward to strengthening cooperation with universities, research institutes, and domestic component manufacturers to jointly build an innovation ecosystem for China’s high-end laser light sources.
