TOKYO, Sept. 3, 2015 — The Hong Kong Observatory, Hong Kong’s governmental weather agency, has awarded a contract to Mitsubishi Electric Corp. to supply two terminal Doppler lidar systems for the Hong Kong International Airport.

The devices are capable of detecting nearby low-level wind shear and turbulence during nonprecipitation conditions. They take measurements by using a single-frequency pulse laser to capture the movements of dust and other tiny particles suspended in the air.

The addition of the system will allow the airport to observe wind shear and turbulence under all weather conditions. In March, Mitsubishi Electric supplied the observatory with a terminal Doppler weather radar for the detection of wind shear and turbulence during precipitation. That system used microwave signals to measure the movement of raindrops in the atmosphere.
