Huang Dexiu: the Earliest Promoter of "China Optical Valley" Announced His Resignation

On February 10, Wuhan DR Laser Technology Co. Ltd (DR Laser) announced that the company received a resignation report submitted by the director, Huang Dexiu, on February 9, 2017. After the resignation, Huang will not assume any other duty.
 
Huang Dexiu, born in October 1937, graduated from Huazhong Institute of Technology (now is called “Huazhong University of Science and Technology”), majored in radio components and materials professional in 1963. From 1972 to 1981 he researched on solid-state laser devices. From 1981 to 1983, he was engaged in semiconductor optoelectronics research at the Oregon Graduate Center in the United States as a visiting scholar. After returned to China, Huang kept researched in the fields of semiconductor optoelectronics and optical fiber communications. He has held the following duties: Expert of photoelectron group of National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program); Director of Wuhan Science and Technology Expert Committee; Director of the Department of Optoelectronic Engineering and Dean of the School of Information Science and Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology; and Deputy director of Wuhan National Laboratory of Optoelectronics. Huang was rehired after retirement in 2008 by the university till 2013. He is currently the executive director of Chinese Optical Society. He was the earliest person to promote "China Optical Valley" in Wuhan and he serves as a member of the Advisory Committee. On September 7, 2015, Huang Dexiu was elected as the director of DR Laser for a term of three years.
 
Nowadays, "China Optical Valley" in Wuhan is famous in the industry, but many people do not know Huang Dexiu, who is the earliest promoter of it. It was in 1998 when Huang Dexiu first talked about the idea to develop electronics industry in Wuhan to the president of Huazhong University of Science and Technology at that time, Zhou Ji. Zhou Ji strongly supported and encouraged the idea. Soon, Huang Dexiu submitted a proposal on the construction of "China Optical Valley" in Wuhan to Wuhan Municipal Science and Technology Committee. This proposal has aroused widespread concern. The government soon made the decision to build "China Optical Valley" in Wuhan.
